Local schools compete in Winnie Mandela Cricket Tournament

To celebrate the life of one of our nation’s greatest heroines, Winnie Mandela, African Bank staff came out to support the Inter-school cricket tournament held at Winnie Mandela Primary School on 13 April 2018.

A combination of boys and girls from local schools in Tembisa all competed on an equal playing field – in the true spirit of Mama Winnie Mandela. The tournament started off with a special event to celebrate the life of Nomzamo Madikizela Mandela. Staff from various departments in the bank had the opportunity to share their memories and the impact she had made on the country with 350 of the Grade 6 and 7 learners.

Kennedy Dembetembe, National CSI Manager for African Bank, explained that the Bank, in line with one of its core focus areas to support school sport development, sponsors the Kwaphenduka Junior Cricket Development Program at eight schools across Tembisa.  “The project aims to encourage physical and mental development of students in Tembisa through the beautiful game of cricket,” explains Dembetembe.

Dembetembe said the tournament was a great success. “The children all had such fun competing. This is the first of four tournaments that the children will play and we are really looking forward to the next tournament later in the second term,” he says.

To assist Winnie Mandela Primary School, African Bank donated R10,000 to the school to go towards improving the schooling environment and education outcomes for the children. Dembetembe said it was also so good to have the support of senior executives within the Bank including Group Executive for Human Capital, Lindiwe Miyambu; Senior Business Partner,  Masego Moeletsi; Senior Manager: Collections Contact Centre, Mountain Ndlovu and Henry Beukes, and Regional Manager, Tebogo Mabotsa.

Special thanks also need to be extended to African Bank’s Cecilia Mokoena from CSI for arranging the event and Kwaphenduka Projects, the NGO that African Bank sponsors to implement the Junior Cricket Development Project across schools in Tembisa. Also to partners Famous Brands and Coca Cola who sponsored a meal and beverage for all Grade 6 students.
