Following the highly successful second Motor Mech 2020 show in Port Elizabeth earlier this year, the show, hosted by the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), a proud association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), is now coming to East London. It will be hosted on 13 June at the Port Rex Technical School.
Co-organisers Teresa Spenser Higgs, Border MIWA Chairperson, the MIWA Border Regional Committee and Peter van Mosseveld, MIWA Associational Representative, who was also integrally involved in organising the PE show, say the show will be a real highlight on the East London Calendar. “We have already been overwhelmed with the incredible support and enthusiasm shown by Port Rex Principal, Mr Etienne Theron, Tim Kirby, Port Rex Marketing, and the rest of the staff at the school.”
Spenser Higgs says plans are currently being finalised. Gates will open at 10:00 till 16:00.
Spectators can look forward to an action-packed line-up including industry related suppliers, car displays, local MIWA workshops and a showdown between the future mechanics in the area. “We will have a junior mechanic competition between the local technical high schools with the top four male students and then the top four female students” says Spenser – Higgs. Van Mosseveld adds that they really want to encourage as many schools to participate as possible, particularly the girls’ schools. “Christine Hancock, the only female participant in the School Mechanical Competition in PE ended up being one of our finalists,” says van Mosseveld.
There will definitely be something for everyone. Other activities during the day will include various car and motor bike displays, children’s activities and food and drinks stalls. There will also be displays around the school including various MIWA workshops, spare shops, spare manufacturers, colleges, Moto Health and other motor-related industries. “It’s going to be a great day and we want to encourage everyone to come and support us,” says Spenser Higgs.
All the proceeds from the event will go to the Port Rex Technical School and will be put to good use developing much-needed skills. MIWA is a proud association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI).
Spenser Higgs says East London is the perfect region for the show. “Our East London economy is largely based in the motor industry with the Daimler Chrysler production plant based in East London. We are also fortunate to have The Automotive Learning Academy at Daimler Chrysler where students in the motor Industry can now do their trade qualifications locally.”
“We want to raise awareness and excitement about the motor industry. We want junior school children to know there is a career in Motor Mechanics and to know which schools are available for this career. For those in high school, we would like to educate them on what the industry is all about and the options in terms of colleges and workshops that are available. We are passionate about this industry, from training, to quality parts, to graded workshops and working together to improve skills levels and customer experiences,” she says.
Our aim is to get 5 000 people through the gates before we close at 16:00. “Come along for some fun and bring your friends and family. Let’s support this great cause,” concludes Spenser Higgs.
