Motorists once again need to be aware of key hot spot smash and grab intersections.
Witkoppen Road, the Buccleuch Interchange, corner West Street and Maude Street, Cnr 5th Street and Maude Street and corner Gwen Lane and Maude Street have all being earmarked by the South African Police Services and Fidelity ADT as hot spot intersections for crime in the North.
Linda Reeder, Community development manager for Fidelity ADT, says these intersections are notorious for smash-and-grab incidents and if we can just raise awareness with motorists who frequently use them, it may reduce the risk. “These criminals are usually after valuable items such as handbags, laptops, shopping bags, gym bags and cell phones. The most important thing is to never put these items on a seat or on the floor of your car where they are visible to criminals. The boot is always preferred. We are also reminding motorists to lock all doors and close windows; to avoid getting into discussions with street vendors and to constantly be aware of their surroundings,” she says.
“Walking and talking on one’s cell phone is also dangerous, particularly around the Gautrain area where we continue to see regular criminal activity,” concludes Reeder
